Lip Repair

By wjoengler

During college I was involved in an incident where I was blindsided in the face by an empty beer pitcher.  I fell off the bar into the dishwasher behind the bar.  I sustained a severe laceration to my upper lip which has never quite healed properly.  What are my options and/or your recommendations on what can be done for me?

The recommended procedure to improve a scar depends on the characteristics of the scar that are bothersome.  If the scar is persistently red this can be treated by a laser....if it is raised that can be treated with dermabrasion to smooth out the area....if the area is depressed then this can be treated with reexcision of the scar....if the elements of the lip are not properly lined up this also requires scar revision.

Generally speaking one should wait approx 6-12 months prior to any intervention in order to let the scar fully mature, but there are exceptions to this rule.
