Skin cancer

By G. W. Crile

I have skin cancer on my nose, and my doctor recommended surgery, is this something plastic surgeons can treat?

Skin cancer treatment is determined by many different factors: size of lesion, location on the body and the cell type to name a few.  The state of the art technique in removing skin cancer is called Mohs microsurgery generally performed by a dermatologist trained in Mohs surgery.  Mohs surgery used to remove skin cancer on the nose is ideal for two reasons
1.  Because the doctor checks under the microscope to confirm that all the cancer was removed there is a very low chance of a relapse
2. This type of resection also allows one to spare as much normal tissue as possible which is important especially on the face.  The tissue sparing will allow an easier reconstruction.

Plastic surgeons therefore are not generally the ones responsible for removing the skin cancer but are the ones responsible for the reconstruction of the defect.
